Students are able to register their top 3 choices for Term 2 electives starting today. The electives sign up process is open until the 22nd of January. An email was sent out to families with descriptions for all the choices. There were some hiccups with the Outdoor Elective and the Financial Management Elective. Those kinks should be worked out by Monday, so it is important for students wishing to register for either of those electives to connect with their teachers on Monday to ensure the process goes smoothly.

Students were treated to a powerful presentation this morning spooned by MADD. We had an opportunity to speak with students prior to the presentation as well as after about the importance of never being in a vehicle driven by an impaired person. More information about this presentation can be found on the attached document. We encourage parents to speak with their children about today's presentation and have them speak about the advice they received.
Students of 7.1 and 7.2 attended a presentation from a member of the Youth Central organization. This organization is committed to helping young people find volunteer opportunities in our city. If you are interested in learning more, please visit www.youthcentral.com.
Grade 7's have will have an opportunity to attend a TELUS-sponsored workshop that engages students in a discussion about cyberbullying, identity theft, protecting and positively growing their online reputation and more.
The workshop schedule is as follows, and is out of the Learning Commons. We will call down classes as appropriate. These have been added to the community calendar, and additional details will be explained closer to the event. In the meantime, mark January 24th from 9-10 in the morning in your agenda book. Connect is hosting a "Parent Summit Presentation" featuring Dr. Brent Macdonald on Wednesday September 26th from 6:30 - 8:00 pm in the gym.

Scholastic.com has developed a slick list of 6 important things to consider when engaging in online research:
1. Check Your Sources The Skill: Evaluating information found in your sources on the basis of accuracy, validity, appropriateness for needs, importance, and social and cultural context. 2. Ask Good Questions The Skills: Developing and refining search queries to get better research results 3. Go Beyond the Surface The Skill: Displaying persistence by continuing to pursue information to gain a broad perspective 4. Be Patient The Skill: Displaying emotional resilience by persisting in information searching despite challenges 5. Respect Ownership The Skill: Respecting intellectual property rights of creators and producers 6. Use Your Networks The Skill: Using social networks and information tools to gather and share information The original article from Scholastic can be viewed here Please keep an eye on your inboxes, as Mr. B and I are in the process of sending out parent invitations to the Humanities and Math/Science Freshgrade portfolios. If you encounter any problems accepting the invites, it may have to do with the email you used to originally sign up with. Please let us know of any issues and we will do our best to help.
